 A Brief History

The Club was formed in 1974, when the opportunity was provided to join the Lincolnshire League. The team were initially based at the Dolphin pub, with the football being played at Fred Gough School. The Club moved to its current Birch Park home in 1983.

The senior side experienced a successful period during the early 90's winning the Lincolnshire League in three successive seasons, 1989-90, 1990-91 and 1991-92. Other successes included a trio of cup wins in 1987, 1989 and 1990.

In 2000 the first team entered the Central Midlands League and gained promotion to the Supreme Division in its first season. After two years at that level, the team found themselves back in the Premier Division, but in 2005 Manager Raz Clayton led the team back to the Supreme Division where last season they became League Champions and gained promotion to the Northern Counties East Football League.

In the first season the team finished in a 'creditable' 3rd position just missing out on promotion to the Premier League.

The Club has for many years supported the local Scunthorpe and District Football Leagues with both Saturday and Sunday football experiencing variable levels of success on the way. Recently the Club has not been represented in the Saturday League with the Youth team electing to play their football on a Sunday, this season will once again see 2 teams representing the Club in the Sunday competitions.

The Club's Football Development programme provides for the return of a progression route for the youth to play Saturday football.

The year 2000 saw the amalgamation of the Junior and Senior Clubs clearly demonstrating that players starting with the Club at the age of 6 could be encouraged to stay with the Club for their progress in football. Last season the Club boasted eleven teams playing mini-soccer in the local Caparo League, three teams in the Kalson League, and an Under 15 team competing in the Mid-Lincolnshire League. Over the years many teams have achieved notable successes with quite a number of players being selected to join the Scunthorpe United F.C. School of Excellence.

Five years ago saw the introduction of girls' football into the Club as part of the ongoing developing scene; we are considered to be one of the top girls' Clubs in the region. Last season we had seven teams competing in the South Humber Ladies' League and achieved a similar amount of success that we have in previous years. We have a ladies' team, which competes in the Lincolnshire County League, and we hope for future success as the girls mature.

The Club's proudest moment was in 2003, when they became a FA Charter Standard Community Club, being one of the first Clubs in the country to get the achievement. The Club had to work very hard to meet all of the FA criteria and is now reaping the benefits and rewards. Extensive coaching schemes have been established with local schools through the Lincolnshire FA with many of the older junior players being involved in coaching and refereeing and enjoying the success that comes with 'quality' coaching with numerous league and cup successes.

This massive involvement in 'grass roots football' and its development will see the provision of enhanced facilities to support the same, work is still progressing with the appropriate grant applications to afford Changing Room facilities and the provision of an 'All-Weather' facility for the use of all those who play their sport at Birch Park and the local Community.

Visitor to our ground will see the progress made with the stadia facilities which are a necessity to meet the criteria required to support the progression of the first team up the football pyramid, a considerable amount of resource and investment that would not be possible without the support of the Club members and the local Community.
